Random Striped Hat

Pattern made by Bryanna

This hat has a kind of random stripe pattern. It is perfect for a kid or yourself. This hat unstretched is only a little more than 19 in. around, but it is very stretchy and should fit most people.

Attach light blue yarn. Knit 1 row. Purl 1 row. Next row: Purl 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches across the row until there are 2 stitches remaining. Purl those 2 stitches. Next row: Knit 2 stitches, Purl 2 stitches across the row until there are 2 stitches remaining. Knit those stitches. Repeat those 2 rows 3 more times.

Attach white yarn and work 4 rows in stockinette stitch.

Attach light blue yarn and knit 2 rows. (garter stitch)

Attach white yarn. Knit 1 row, Purl 1 row.

Attach dark blue yarn. Knit 1 row, Purl 1 row. Purl 4 more rows. (garter stitch)

Decreasing for the top of the hat: still using the dark blue yarn, knit 2 stitches together at the beginning and end of the row. Next row: Purl all stitches. Repeat those 2 rows until there are only 80 stitches remaining on the needle. End with the second row of the repeat. Next row: Knit 2 stitches together accross the entire row. (40 stitches)

You are now done knitting the hat. It should look something like this:

The fabric should be about 8 inches from the cast on edge to the needle. Now you need to cut the yarn leaving a long end for sewing. Using a yarn needle, pull the long end though all the loops remaning on the needle and pull tight. This will bunch up the fabric making the top of the hat connected. Sew a couple of stitches to close up any hole on the top.

Your hat should look something like this now:

Now all you have to do is sew up the back seam. I use the long tails from joining the colors. Then just weave in the loose ends and your done!

Other Hats

When making a hat, don't just stick to the colors written in the pattern, have fun with your knitting. You can use any worsted weight yarn (I almost always use Red Heart yarn or Caron yarn, but I'm a poor teenager). If you like this pattern, then try something new by changing colors even when the pattern does not say to, or if you are on experienced knitter add cables!

This hat I made for my sister for christmas! I used cables and added little hearts to make it stand out!
