Basic Gloves

The pattern for these gloves does not include the stripes. To add the stripes, change colors every 2 rows. These gloves are perfect for playing outside in the snow because the Red Heart yarn I used is very firm at 5 sts to the inch. The size of these gloves is a childs large or a womans extra small. To change the size, all you have to do is change the gauge by either using bigger needles or thicker yarn. I am sorry for the smallness of these gloves. I almost always design patterns for myself and I have very small hands. I'm not joking... it makes playing guitar very hard...

Yarn weight: Worsted
Needle type: 4 double pointed needles
Needle size: US-3
Gauge: 5 sts per 1 in. for a child large, or 4.75 sts per 1 in. for a womans small.

The child size large gloves have a 7 inch palm circumference and a 6 inch wrist circumference. The woman size small gloves have a 7.5 inch palm circumference and about a 6.5 inch wirst circumference.

Left Glove

Cuff

Cast on 30 stitches and spread these stitches evenly onto 3 double pointed needles (10 sts on each needle).
Connect into a round being carful not to twist the stitches.
Work 8 rounds in 1 x 1 ribbing.
Next, work 5 rounds in stockinette stitch.

Palm before thumb

In the next round, Increase 1 stitch in the middle of the third needle.
Next round: knit all of the stitches.
Repeat those two rounds 6 more times. (17 sts on first needle, 10 sts on 2nd and 3rd needle)

Thumb Hole

Instead of knitting round, you will need to start knitting flat by turning inbetween each round.
For the first row, you should be on the wrong side. Purl 2 stitches.
Move those 2 stitches to a stitch holder.
Finish purling all of the stitches but stop when there are only 2 stitches left in the row.
Move those 2 stitches onto the stitch holder with the other 2 stitches.
You should have 15 stitches on one needle, 10 stitches on another needle, and 8 stitches on the last needle. You should be knitting as how you were to knit round but turn work instead of connecting rounds.
Turn work and knit all of the stitches on the next row.
Work 8 more rows in stst.

Palm after thumb

You should have just finished a right side row. Knit a round to connect the top of the thumb hole.
Knit 9 more rounds in stockinette stitch.
Slip the 33 stitches onto a stitch holder. (I used just a piece of scrap yarn) These stitches will be used for the fingers.

Thumb

The 4 stitches left on a stitch holder under the thumb hole, put them onto one of your double pointed needles, attach yarn and knit them.
Using one of your stare needles, pick up a stitch on the side of the thumb hole and knit it onto the needle with the rest of the stitches.
Turn work and Purl the 5 stitches and pick up and purl another stitch.
Turn work and knit across the 6 stitches. Pick up and knit another stitch.
Turn work and purl the 7 stitche. Pick up and purl another stitch.
Turn work and knit across the 8 stitchs.
Now we need to start knitting in a round. With a second needle, pick up and knit 4 stitches around the thumb hold.
With a third needle, pick up and knit 4 more stitch around the other side of the thumb hole. (16 sts total)
Now connect the 16 stitches into a round and knit every stitch in the round.
In the next round, knit all of the stitches until you get to the last 2 stitches on the second needle. Knit those 2 stitches together. On the the 3rd needle, knit the first 2 stitches together. Knit the last 2 stitches in the round.
Next round: knit all of the stitches.
Next round: knit the last 2 stitches together stitches together on the second needle. Finish knitting the round.
Rearange the stitches so they are evenly spaced out.
Work 17 more rounds in stockinette stitch. (Or however many are needed for the length of your thumb)
To finish, cut yarn so there is a enough of an end to sew with.
Using a yarn needle, run though all of the active loops and pull tight to close of the top of the thumb.
Sew a couple of stitches to make sure there is no hole in the top of the thumb. Fasen off and weave in loose ends.

Pointer finger

With the stitches that are on the stitch holder closest to the thumb, put 5 of the stitches from the back of the hand onto one needle. Put 4 stitches from the palm of the hand onto a second needle.
Attach yarn to the needle with 4 stitches on it and knit along the first and second needle.
Now you should have reached the empty spot between the fingers. On a thrid needle, cast on 3 stitches.
Knit one full round.
Rearange the stitches so they are evenly spaced out, and knit 21 more rounds. (Or however many are needed for the length of your finger)
Finish the tip as how you did for the thumb.

Middle finger

Right next to the pointer finger, with your first needle take 4 stitches on the palm side of the glove. Attach yarn and knit the 4 stitches.
With the second needle, pick up and knit 4 stitches from the cast on edge of the pointer finger.
With a 3rd needle, take 4 stitches from the stich holder from the back of the hand and knit them.
Cast on 2 stitches at the end of this needle.
Next round: knit the 4 stitches on the first needle, knit 2 stitches together twice on the second needle, knit the 6 stitches on the 3rd needle.
Rearange the stitches so they are evenly spaced out, and knit 24 more rounds. (Or however many are needed for the length of your finger)
Finish the tip as how you did for the thumb.

Ring finger

Right next to the middle finger, with your first needle take 4 stitches on the palm side of the glove. Attach yarn and knit the 4 stitches.
With the second needle, pick up and knit 4 stitches from the cast on edge of the middle finger.
With a 3rd needle, take 4 stitches from the stich holder from the back of the hand and knit them.
Cast on 2 stitches at the end of this needle.
Next round: knit the 4 stitches on the first needle, knit 2 stitches together twice on the second needle, knit the 6 stitches on the 3rd needle.
Rearange the stitches so they are evenly spaced out, and knit 21 more rounds. (Or however many are needed for the length of your finger)
Finish the tip as how you did for the thumb.

Pinky finger

There should be 8 stitches remaining on the stitch holder.
Right next to the middle finger, with your first needle take 4 stitches on the palm side of the glove. Attach yarn and knit the 4 stitches.
With the second needle, pick up and knit 4 stitches from the cast on edge of the ring finger.
With a 3rd needle, take the remaining 4 stitches from the stich holder and knit them.
Next round: knit the 4 stitches on the first needle, knit 2 stitches once in the middle of the second needle, knit the 4 stitches on the 3rd needle.
Knit 16 more rounds. (Or however many are needed for the length of your finger)
Finish the tip as how you did for the thumb.

Right Glove

Make it the same as the left glove, but in the palm before the thumb, increase the stitches on the first needle instead of the 3rd needle. Also, when knitting the fingers, reverse the palm of the hand and the back of the hand. So if it says to pick up 4 stitches from the back of the hand, you should pick them up from the palm of the hand.
